Given the increasing volume of cases being performed in ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs), practitioners are being asked to provide a wide array of services while simultaneously expected to maintain exceptional quality. The additional administrative burden this places on a facility requires continuous attention since the practice of healthcare includes multiple changing facets. ASCs need to understand the variety of risks that may threaten their viability and develop a practical approach in handling them. Furthermore, with the increasing emphasis being placed on patient safety and quality of care delivered by providers, anesthesiologists are expected to refine their practice through new quality improvement (QI) measures. Undertaking QI projects may be a daunting task for providers, but by identifying areas for improvement and developing systematic methods of achieving these goals, ASCs can optimize patient care and work efficiency. In this chapter, we address essential components of risk management and quality improvement that ASCs should consider when attempting to provide safe and effective patient care.
